This series "A year in the life of a Magnolia x soulangeana tree", was started in March 2009 and is from a mature tree that grows in Gaynor's own garden. This of course made it easier to keep abreast of the changes throughout the year.
The main and largest painting was the first picture started and it was completed in September 2010. The other pictures, except for ones with disections, were all painted at the appropriate life-cycle phase of the tree and were thus all painted from life.
The pictures that include disections were also painted from life, but brought together in the final painting from detailed sketches Gaynor had made.
Did you know that the Magnolia tree is fertilised by beetles?
The Magnolia x soulangeana series is in a limited edition of 75 copies only. They are all Giclée prints from original copyright paintings by Gaynor. Archival quality paper and inks are used.
